On India’s southwestern coast, Goa is the perfect place to enjoy the country’s beachside resorts. Soak in the warm waters as well as the charming colonial vibe that comes from centuries spent as a colony of Portugal.

You can see the Portuguese influence in the Fontainhas quarter of the Goa state capital, Panjim. Soak in the old-world charm through streets of charming yellow, blue and red buildings. Walk to Church Square to see Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, a bright white Baroque-style church first built in 1541. It’s an eye-catching sight from the city garden at its feet, and you can clearly see its large bell, the second largest church bell in India.

For a religious experience that’s a bit different, take a drive to the top of Altinho Hill to visit Maruti Temple. Though only about a century old[LT1] , this temple to the Hindu god Hanuman is colorful and will brighten up your day.

Of course, many tourists are here for the beaches, and they are certainly worth it. There are plenty to choose from. Try out Dona Paula Beach, which features a pretty viewing point on a raised promenade and lovely resort hotels. Or Sinquerim Beach, with beautiful yellow sands and a view of Aguada fort, where locals hang out and fish. Try your hand at water activities like wind-surfing, scuba diving and parasailing.

Take a day trip about an hour north of the city to the ruins of Corjuem Fort. This was built in 1705 to defend Portuguese land against the Maratha Empire, a fierce group of Indian fighters. The island fort has seen better days, but is still a great spot to view the surrounding lush green lands.
