Zack. Maya, the cherry blossom viewing season is under full swing and
I can’t believe you haven’t mentioned it. Usually, it’s all you can talk about
at this time of the year.
Maya Well,
you took the words out of my mouth. I was just about to point you to Yoshino, a
town in Nara Prefecture. Here, check out these images.
Zack That’s
stunning. I’ve never seen anything like it. What am I looking at?
Maya Cherry
blossom trees on Mount Yoshino. The mountain is in the Kii Mountains, a
mountain range that UNESCO put on its list of World Heritage
sites in 2004.
Zack It
put the mountain range in the listing?
Maya Well,
to be precise, UNESCO refers to the pilgrimage routes that link three sacred
Shinto sites in the area to the ancient capitals of Nara and Kyoto. But the
natural surroundings are gorgeous and they attract more than just pilgrims.
Zack I
was about to say. I’d love to go hiking here when the cherry blossoms are in
bloom.
Maya Well
then, the timing is almost ideal. According to the Met Agency[LT1] ,
the cherry blossom front will hit Nara on March 28th and the trees will be in
full bloom by April 3rd.
Zack Good
grief, It looks like there are hundreds of trees here.
Maya They
claim the number is 30,000. People
flock to the best spots to see what they call “senbon” — a
thousand trees. All through April you can see trees flowering. It’s a
magnificent sight.
Zack And
one I’m definitely looking forward to!

in the Kii Mountain range. It’s a vast area that includes not just Mount
Yoshino but
